Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
CGS - Level 1
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a religious formation method for children based on the educational philosophies of Maria Montessori. It was developed in Rome, Italy in 1954 by Sofia Cavaletti (a Hebrew Scripture scholar) and Gianna Gobbi (a former assistant to Maria Montessori). CGS is an approach to catechesis through which the youngest children may build a deep, life-long relationship with Christ and His Church.
In a prepared environment called an atrium, children encounter the love of the Good Shepherd through works suited to their developmental needs. The atrium is a quiet and peaceful place where young children can pray and ponder upon the Mysteries of the Catholic Faith.
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd consists of three levels:
Level I (grades Pre3-K)
Level II (grades 1-3)
Level III (grades 4-6)
St. Charles Catholic School currently has Level I. All our PreK and Kindergarten classes spend time weekly in the atrium. We are focused on helping our school children fall in love with Jesus and fostering their relationships with God.
